Taekwondo is a Korean martial art. Tae means “to strike or break with the foot”, kwon means to strike or break with the fist” and do means the “way”.
Thus, Taekwondo may be loosely translated as “the art of kicking and punching”. Taekwondo is the world’s most popular martial art and is an official
Olympic sport. Taekwondo is noted for its spectacular kicking techniques and is by far the most dynamic of the martial arts in this regard.
The original concept of the martial arts incorporated a system of training that went far beyond fighting. The arts were intended to take practitioners
past the violent antagonism of hand-to-hand combat to a radical transformation of their very being. The essence of the martial arts is not solely
concerned with conquering an opponent, but with coming to terms with oneself. Taekwondo can be many things to many people. For some it is
about achieving physical fitness, while others regard it as an ideal means of self defense.
But Taekwondo can also be much more than that, and can lead to a path of self-discovery and selfrenewal. Beyond physical fighting skills,
Taekwondo teaches a way to enhance one’s spirit and life through training the mind and body.
